I know that 1/2 is the same as 2/4 (if I cut each of those big halves into two pieces). So now I have 2/4 + 1/4. Now I’m adding equal-sized pieces: 2 pieces plus 1 piece equals 3 pieces out of 4, or 3/4.
The math way of doing this is to find what’s called a “common denominator” – that just means making the bottom numbers the same. You can always multiply the two bottom numbers together (2 x 4 = 8), but often there’s a smaller number that works, which keeps the numbers simpler.
Subtracting Fractions: The Same Idea, Different Operation
Subtraction works exactly the same way as addition – you just subtract instead of add. Let’s say you had 7/8 of a tank of gas and you used 3/4 of a tank. How much is left?
First, I need to get those bottom numbers the same. I know that 3/4 is the same as 6/8 (multiply top and bottom by 2). So 7/8 – 6/8 = 1/8. You have 1/8 of a tank left.
Multiplying Fractions: The Surprisingly Easy One
This is my favorite fraction operation because it’s so straightforward. No common denominators needed! You just multiply straight across.
Let’s say you want to make 1/2 of a recipe that calls for 2/3 cup of flour. How much flour do you need?
You simply multiply 1/2 × 2/3. Multiply the tops: 1 × 2 = 2. Multiply the bottoms: 2 × 3 = 6. So you get 2/6, which simplifies to 1/3 cup.
See? Much easier than addition!
Dividing Fractions: The “Flip It” Magic Trick
This one sounds complicated but has a simple trick. Instead of dividing, you flip the second fraction and multiply.
Let’s say you have 3/4 of a pizza and want to divide it into portions that are each 1/8 of a pizza. How many portions can you make?
That’s 3/4 ÷ 1/8. The trick is: flip the second fraction (so 1/8 becomes 8/1) and change the division to multiplication: 3/4 × 8/1.
Now multiply straight across: (3 × 8)/(4 × 1) = 24/4 = 6. You can make 6 portions!
Simplifying Fractions: Making Life Easier
Would you rather have 50/100 of a dollar or 1/2 of a dollar? They’re the same amount, but 1/2 is much easier to understand. That’s what simplifying is all about.
Take the fraction 24/36. I look for the largest number that divides evenly into both. That’s 12. 24 ÷ 12 = 2, and 36 ÷ 12 = 3. So 24/36 simplifies to 2/3.
